The Casa Milà, popularly known as ‘La Pedrera’ because of its external appearance, is an unusual modernist building, constructed between 1906 and 1912 by the architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) and declared UNESCO World Heritage in 1984.

This architectural jewel represents the culmination of the Gaudi’s work, maximum expression of his unflagging creative ability. For the originality of the roof and the spectacularity of the facade, with sinuous curves and forms inspired from nature, La Pedrera is considered a unique building, one of the most important ones of the twentieth century.

It’s an emblematic and special construction, in the central Barcelona’s Eixample district, Passeig de Gràcia avenue, which offers different spaces adaptable to all kind of needs.

The roof of La Pedrera is a unique work, an spacious area with stairs and spectacular views of the center of Barcelona, the main avenues Passeig de Gràcia and Provença, and views to other emblematic places of the city, such as Sagrada Família, the castle of Montjuic, the park of Tibidabo and the Agbar tower.

This unusual roof, brimming with artistic force, bears no semblance to the architecture of its time. Its undulating shape is in keeping with the form and rhythm of the main facade, and different elements are laid out over the area: stairwells, ventilation shafts and chimneys.

These dynamic and symbolic forms, open to interpretation, were designed to fulfill a functional role. Some of them are decorated with trencadís (broken tile shards), stone, marble and glass.

La Pedrera has two interconnect courtyards, The Passeig de Gracia courtyard and the Provença one. They both seem caves because of their undulating open ceiling. These two courtyards are huge and have light from the outside.

The facades of the courtyards are a veritable spectacle of forms, light and color. Color is lent by the murals that decorate them, mostly with floral motifs, which also adorn the ceilings and lateral walls of the two entrance lobbies and the main staircase, featuring various scenes with mythological references and polychromatic details.

Found in one of the gems of Gaudí’s architectural creations, the attic of La Pedrera, which once housed the laundry facilities, is formed by 270 catenary brick arches, it’s a huge and original space due to its light and atmosphere; its shape imitates a whale belly.

Now it plays host to the only exhibition dedicated to Gaudí’s life and work and presents his creations through scale models and plans, objects and drawings, photographs and videos. It affords visitors an insight into the most distinctive elements of his oeuvre, as well as the fundamental aspects of his architecture and the secrets behind his genius.

Located on the fourth floor of La Pedrera, we found the apartment, which recreates the home and lifestyle of a bourgeois family in Barcelona in the early 20th century. Recreating the original layout, fitted out with furniture and household items of the time as well as the decorative elements designed by Gaudí (knobs or handles, moldings, doors and flooring), it offers visitors a glimpse of what it was like to live in.

On the first or main floor were we found the residence of the Milà family, the former owners, today we see a 1.300 m2 room for temporary exhibitions, inaugurated in 1992, that holds two exhibitions per year.

Thanks to this big and open room we can see sculpted stone columns, with ornamental motifs and inscriptions, and some fragments of false ceilings, which play with the idea of bringing continuity to the undulating rhythms of the facade.

In order to enter to the temporary exhibition you need to cross the majestic staircase from the vestibule, with its railings worked with spiraling iron ribbons and are decorated with mural paintings which at some points reproduce Gaudí’s trademark trencadís. The availability of this room as an open and empty space depends on the temporary exhibitions calendar.

The Auditorium, once La Pedrera’s garage, is the largest room in the building with a capacity of more than 250 people. It is an ideal venue for holding all kinds of events, due to its dimensions and versatility. It’s accessible to people with physical disabilities and equipped with the latest technological features. Space: 426m2. Has an stage and theatre seats distribute around the room.

The Gaudí Room, once La Pedrera’s garage, is a diaphanous room thanks to an innovative metallic structure designed by Gaudí.This room is versatile, since it can host events of the most diverse types. This space connected to the Auditorium has some excellent facilities to provide catering services. Space: 240m2.

Both Gaudí Room and the Auditorium have a side area with direct access to a terrace giving an exclusive view of the rear façade of La Pedrera, and a VIP room.

“Els Quatre Gats” lounge room is a room on the mezzanine floor, overlooking Passeig de Gràcia Avenue. This room has magnificent ceilings and parquet floors designed by Gaudí. Due to its dimensions allows to do any kind of act or activity, even recreations of the beginning of the twentieth century thanks to its Gaudí esthetics. Space: 70,69m2.

La Pedrera has adapted this room that Antoni Gaudí designed as bourgeois residence. This is a fine space with a Modernist air, where the organisation and Gaudí’s sinuous forms combine perfectly in an intimate atmosphere and very welcoming surroundings.
